1 dead, police injured in Memphis shooting

MEMPHIS — One person was killed and a police officer was seriously injured Thursday afternoon after authorities took to social media to describe a “police-involved shooting” at a Memphis library.

The Memphis Police Department has been under scrutiny following the beating that resulted in the death of Tire Nichols last month and said the man shot was pronounced dead at the scene. The department said the officer was taken to the hospital in an “extremely critical condition.”

Police say the shooting happened after officers received a call from the library at 12:32 p.m.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, a state agency that reviews police shootings, said on Twitter that local District Attorney Steven J. Mulroy had asked its agents to investigate the shooting.

The agency is also investigating Mr. Nichols’ death, said an update would be provided at the scene.

Neither agency immediately provided details on what led to the shooting, or who or how many people fired the shots.

Police could be seen entering and exiting the Poplar-White Station library and cordoning it off with yellow tape after the shooting.

The library is located in an upscale area of ​​the East Memphis neighborhood, surrounded by restaurants, bars, and a Whole Foods grocery store. Directly behind the library is a 34-story office building called the Clark Tower.

Sundiata Williams, who works at Clark Tower, said she was about to go downstairs to get a pizza at lunchtime when she noticed security locked the front door of her office building.

“It kind of shocked me,” she said. “I was coming down for lunch and they said, ‘No, go that way.'”
