Golf equipment has continued to evolve and become more advanced in recent years. In particular, modern technology has allowed clubs to get smaller, allowing golfers to hit the ball farther than ever before. On Wednesday, former PGA Tour golfer Tom Watson joined CBS Sports at the 2023 PGA Show Discuss how far technology has come in the sport — and why it’s a positive.

“It’s great for the game because it makes it easier,” Watson said. “Perimeter weighted clubs, metal heads and lightweight shafts versus the old dynamic shafts. We were using drivers that weighed closer to 14 ounces. Now, today’s drivers are 11-plus ounces. You can swing faster and hit farther.

“Everybody wants to hit the ball farther, right? Farther, faster. Every manufacturer wants you to hit the ball farther, faster, and that makes sense. Technology does make golfers more Easy to play.”

Watson announced his retirement from the sport in 2019 after winning eight majors during his storied career. Although he no longer plays professional golf, Watson told CBS Sports HQ that he still loves to hit the ball.

“I still love golf. I’m a golfer. I still wake up and I’m a golfer,” he said. “Early in my career, I gave it my all in the game of golf and tried to be the best I could be. It still hasn’t left me. When I’m golfing, I still enjoy hitting the perfect shot. It doesn’t happen for a month More than once. Go out and practice and hit one shot after another, I’m enjoying it.”
