A Valley teacher’s passion for baking is helping her build her career

Fresno, Calif. (KFSN) — And speaking of entertaining… Kristin Vasquez promises a compelling piece that will be the cherry on top of any dinner table.

“I put my love into it, I put my heart and soul into it, and I can’t wait to see where this company goes,” said Kristin Vasquez.

Cakes by Kris – started out of love four years ago – also teaches special education full time at Kratt Elementary School.

The craft was passed down from her grandmother.

“She taught me how to make cream puffs, pies, and more, and bought me a cookbook on how to make recipes ‘from scratch,'” says Vasquez.

The artistry in decorating cakes makes them look as decadent as they taste.

“I prefer the extravagant, floral cakes, and my brown butter cookies are a hit,” says Vasquez.

Brown butter cookies are a fan favourite, and speaking of fans, no matter who you’re rooting for, the team cake is sure to please crowds along with the matchday treats.

Although her Instagram reel makes the process look like a breeze…the business is labor intensive.

“I’m an administrator. I take orders. I quote cakes. I do the shopping. I order all the supplies I need,” Vasquez said. “I had to bake everything from scratch: cakes, cream, cake decorations.”

Prices vary, but on average, cakes run about $180, depending on customization. But cakes and cookies are just the beginning of this burgeoning business.

“I’m expanding. I’m doing charcuterie boards, but as I move forward, I’m moving into grazing tables,” Vasquez said. “I want to be the whole event, the cake, the deli and the cookies. I want to be the whole package.”
