A spate of shootings in three states over consecutive days left 24 people dead, as more cities joined a growing number of American communities scarred by gun violence.

“Only in America have we seen this kind of carnage, this chaos, this destruction of community and life, confidence, safety and belonging,” the California governor said. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday that there were three mass shootings in his state within about 44 hours.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, the United States has recorded 40 mass shootings so far in 2023 — more than at this point in any year on record.

Newsom was still visiting victims of Saturday night’s Monterey Park shooting, which claimed 11 lives, when he was told there was a second shooting Monday afternoon in Half Moon Bay, which officials would later release. Described as an apparent act of “workplace violence”, seven people were killed.

“Two days ago, I was worried that Monterey Park would be overtaken by other headlines. Little did I know I’d be here,” Newsom said in Half Moon Bay. “At the same time, in some cases, the trauma and devastation has been felt across generations – communities are torn apart and no one feels safe.”

The mayor of Monterey Park, still reeling from the attack in his city, offered his condolences to the mourners in Half Moon Bay. “I know what’s in store for them in the next few days,” Mayor Henry Lo said.

Hours after the Half Moon Bay shooting, five people were shot, including an 18-year-old, in Oakland, California, on Monday.

Also Monday, in Des Moines, Iowa, a man opened fire on a building that runs an educational program for at-risk youth, killing two students and critically injuring the program’s founder, police said.

These are just some of the communities grieving in the wake of recent incidents of gun violence, including mass shootings in which four or more people were shot dead, not including the shooter.
