TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) – People and businesses are seeing price increases and store egg shortages across the country. When people find eggs, store shelves are empty and eggs are more expensive.
Tiffany Pate, owner of Desert Bloom Confections in southern Arizona, is dealing with the shortage and soaring prices firsthand. Pate said she has to do more planning when shopping for her business.
“I used to just go to the store and think everything would be there. Now, when I go, I have to think about how many cakes I have and what exactly I need. I also have to go to different stores now instead of one-stop shopping. So it’s more of a trip around the city,” Pater said.
When she found the eggs at the store, she noticed a change in quality too.
“The size seems to be getting smaller. So if my recipe calls for three large eggs, and these aren’t large, I have to account for that. I have to account for that so it doesn’t mess up anything,” she Say.
Jeannette Petersen, owner of Home Sweet Home Macarons in Phoenix, is going through the same thing.
She said she started a farmers market a year ago.
“Back then, I could go to Fry’s and get five dozen eggs in a pack of 60 for about $7. It was like 10 cents an egg. Last fall, I raised the price because egg prices went up,” Peterson said .
She went on to say that if egg prices don’t start to come down, she could lose business. “If I really can’t get eggs, I can’t do it,” she said. “Also, when did it get so expensive that it wasn’t worth it?”
This is something many business owners are struggling to figure out for themselves. How do you plan when you don’t know what the price of eggs will be next month, let alone next year?
If you’re on a tight budget and need some eggs, experts recommend grocery shopping during the week. This may help since many stores will be restocked overnight.
