According to Attorney General Somsak Thepsuthin, Thailand’s Ministry of Justice has been developing a system that uses blockchain technology to enable informants to report drug-trafficking activities to authorities and receive rewards without revealing their identities.
He said many people had information about illegal drug activity near them but were reluctant to notify authorities for fear their identities would be compromised and their lives and those of their families could be at risk.
Blockchain technology can solve this problem, Somsak said, because data flows cannot be traced, which should help the public feel more confident about coming forward.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director General of the Narcotics Bureau Pol Maj-Gen Banphot Mungchobklang said that many governments are using blockchain technology to tackle drug trafficking.
He said the police had commissioned the King’s Institute of Technology in Lagga to develop the blockchain-based system.
