Georgia Power brings new smart technology to Valdosta

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) – With all the new technology the world has to offer, Georgia Power thought it was time to take it up a notch.

Georgia Power says they are investing in the future of energy by making the grid smarter, stronger and more resilient. The new smart circuit will serve the needs of approximately 2,500 people in the community.

The new smart technology grid will be located in Valdosta. Georgia Power said it has tested it elsewhere, some of which have seen their service improve by 40 percent.

Georgia Power said they decided to make this type of investment for a number of reasons. They say it will make their energy grid stronger and more resilient.

“Having some smarts on one of our underperforming circuits here. When I say underperforming, it’s had some reliability issues in the past with weather and wildlife, squirrels, etc.,” Georgia Power Regional Director Joe Brown Lee said.

Georgia Power says they are installing this new smart technology throughout Georgia and are ready to fix any bugs.

Georgia Power says the grid will cater to more than 2,500 people, not just residents. It will serve an elementary and middle school, a backup generator at the South Georgia Medical Center, a hospice, and residents of the area.

“We think the reliability we’re adding to this circuit is going to do great things. We know that in some areas where we’ve done this work, we’ve improved reliability by 40%. We just wanted to let you know that we Working hard for the future of your energy. That’s part of it, at Valdosta,” Brownlee said.

Some people who live on Park Avenue, where the new technology is located, said they were excited about the installation and change.

“I just recently moved to Georgia, so I haven’t experienced a power outage. Let’s hope we don’t, but not yet. That sounds like a good thing because I mean, when the power goes out for days on end, People don’t have to wait for power. So, that sounds like a good thing,” community resident CorDarius North said.

Georgia Power said the bill grid is interconnected. Therefore, improving one part helps the overall energy flow.

“It’s part of what we call the future of energy. Whether it’s from our factories to our transmission lines to our substations to the distribution lines that power your home, this is a smart technology that will Improve the reliability, resiliency and overall quality of your home’s electricity,” Brownlee said.

Some people in the neighborhood said they were fairly new so they couldn’t talk about their service history. But they are interested in seeing the changes this new smart technology brings.

“We recognize that and we’re going to install this smart device that finds faults. Sometimes it fixes the faults without anyone having to push the truck out here. A lot of times it’s going to restore power to as many people as possible and Really reduces the number of outages,” Brownlee said.

Georgia Power says the new track will do well in this part of the town.
