La Plata Business Association Provides $30,000 Fine and Performing Arts Project Award to CCPS

At the Charles County Board of Education meeting on the 15th of November, Keith Grasso of the Island Music Company presented a check for $30,000 to the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Fine and Performing Arts Program. This donation is a collective effort of local and national businesses to help further expand the resources of CCPS fine and performing arts programs.

Every year since 2013, the La Plata Business Association (LPBA) has partnered with CCPS to host a community-wide fine and performing arts event called Rocktoberfest. Grasso said this year’s event will be one of the best since the COVID-19 pandemic put in-person gatherings on hold but canceled due to heavy rain. This year’s scheduled event has nearly 60 sponsors. “This year was the best Rocktoberfest ever, and I was in control of everything except the weather,” Grasso said.

The event is designed to allow community members to listen to live music, shop from local vendors, and spend time with friends and family. “It’s an amazing community event with three or four different stages and vendors around,” said CCPS fine and performing arts content specialist Tim Bodamer.

The event featured “bands performing on stage and on rotation for the community, activities for children and families, and the CCPS high school jazz and marching band,” Bodamer said.

Funds raised from Rocktoberfest will be donated to CCPS fine and performing arts programs. “We’ve gone from a $1,500 donation at our first event to a $60,000 donation, which was our last event; pre-COVID,” Bodamer said.

Bodamer introduced the past uses of the LPBA’s donations. Some uses include providing musical instruments to students in need; adding to the CCPS instrument pool, providing art supplies to improve classrooms, hiring clinicians to collaborate with students and teachers in classroom instruction, and more.
