Winslow – After a successful first workshop, St. Joseph of Lyon is again offering a free tech workshop for anyone over 55 on Wednesday, October 3rd. On the 19th, 1:15-2:45 pm in St. Petersburg. The Joseph Center is located at 80 Garland Road in Winslow. Participants will learn to browse the internet safely, although not necessary, all are welcome to bring a laptop, tablet or smartphone. No experience is required.
The September workshop helped attendees safely handle malicious email, browse and shop, and even use video conferencing.
“During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when work and school and even mass moved to a ‘virtual’ format, we noticed that many seniors in our area were simply lost and completely disappeared,” CSJ Sister Judy Donovan said. People have some form of technology but don’t know how to use it, or don’t have the resources to get technical assistance. Articles are published about this ‘digital inequality’ in the state.”
After reflection and prayer, the sisters decided to do something about the issue.
“We have our centre, a comfortable and safe space that local seniors know, and a great technology and communications executive who is adept at working patiently with those who want to learn. After consulting with those who understand seniors in the area people and their needs, and after hearing from local seniors, we decided to launch Let’s Connect,” Sister Judy said. “Participants enjoyed the first workshop in September and hope to come back next month and say they will tell their friends. We are off to a good start and hopefully this new ministry will grow.”
