Her recent work has focused on testing innovative ways to make the state more accountable to its citizens, such as enhancing women’s economic and political opportunities, ensuring environmental regulations reduce harmful emissions, and providing citizens with effective means to express their needs for state services.

In 2018, Pender received the American Economic Association’s Caroline Bell Shaw Award for promoting women’s success in economics. She is co-chair of the Political Economy and Government Group of the Jameel Poverty Action Lab, a board member of the Bureau of Economic Development Research, and a former co-editor Review of Economics and Statistics.

The Marburg Lecture collection is named in honor of the late Theodore F. Marburg, a longtime member of Marquette’s Department of Economics. The purpose of the lecture is to provide a forum for discussing the moral, philosophical and social dimensions of economic issues, and to continue Professor Marburg’s commitment to the economic aspects of peace and justice. The Marlborough Lectures are held thanks to the generosity of the Marlborough family and the support of the Centre for Global Economic Research.
