San Antonio – The San Antonio Department of Public Works held an open forum meeting Friday to address ongoing construction projects in the city of San Antonio. Mary Avenue.
During a meeting at the Rumble Bar on North Street. On Mary’s and Ashby Streets, Director of Public Works Razi Hosseini explained to residents and business owners that the $11.4 million multi-phase project has experienced minor setbacks but remains on track to be completed by September 2023.
“Late October — we’ll open two lanes that have been closed,” Hosseini said.
By the end of the year, people will see more visible progress, especially on North Street, he said. Mary is just south of East Ashby Street.
However, business owners say ongoing projects are killing their profits.
“People are going to lose their jobs because their incomes are going down. These are real things happening here with real people,” said Chad Carey, president of North St. Louis. Mary’s Business Owners Association.
A colleague of Carey’s, Alan Johnson, owner of The Amp Room, said reducing staff had become a reality at his institution. “Before building, we had four servers and three full-time bartenders. Now, we’re left with one cocktail server and one bartender,” Johnson said.
Johnson said the extra 365 days waiting for the project to complete is a concern for him and his neighbors.
“The walkway was laid three weeks ago. They tore it up on Tuesday to redo it because something wasn’t done right,” he said.
Representatives from the San Antonio District 1 office have scheduled a meeting to address parking issues in the “Nightlife District” area. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday, October 10th at 2pm. 8, at the San Antonio College Victory Center.
