Shelby County Business Outlook Survey Results Announced

Shelby Corporation, AL (WBRC) – How do you not only find great job candidates, but keep them?

Dozens of Shelby County business owners shared their thoughts on business issues affecting Shelby County companies in 2023.

One of the main topics surrounding the findings, presented at the eighth annual Business Outlook Conference, was the talent challenge.

Employers are figuring out how to not only hire but develop and retain current employees.

Surveys show that one of the missing pieces that employees and employers need is communication.

Sometimes, employers forget that they need to tell employees what is expected of them, rather than just expecting employees to know what to do.

Dr. Amiee Mellon, interim dean of the University of Montevallo’s Stephens School of Business, said the idea of the survey was to start a dialogue and work together to find solutions for managers and employees.

“What’s the most important thing on people’s minds right now is probably employee retention,” said Dr. Mellon said. “So showing these different opportunities and benefiting opportunities that can start a conversation and showing how you can come together to make those things happen.”

Other themes that emerged from the survey included profits, spending, Shelby County’s economic direction and educational resources.
