Tire Nichols’ funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. CT in Memphis, with Vice President Kamala Harris joining civil rights leaders and families of black Americans killed by police Attend together.

Two more Memphis police officers were disciplined over Nichols’ death and three emergency responders were fired, officials said Monday. Officer Preston Hemphill, who is white, and another officer, who has not been named, have been suspended, police said.

Calls for local police officials and prosecutors to be more transparent about the circumstances of the incident grew after the release of video footage of the fatal encounter with the police on Friday, given that initial police reports did not match what was seen at the scene.

On the eve of the funeral of Tire Nichols, who died days after he was brutally beaten by Memphis police just minutes from his home, the family is sharing remembrance and expressing grief.

Nichols’ older brother, Jamal Dupree, lamented that he didn’t go to save his brother from being punched and attacked by five officers charged with second-degree murder and other crimes.

“I’ve fought all my life, and a fight I need to be here for, I’m not here,” Dupree said, adding that the violence was against his brother’s nature. “My brother is the most peaceful person I’ve ever lived with,” he said. “If my brother were here today and he had to say something, he’d tell us to do it peacefully.”

The Memphis Police Department initially said Nichols was pulled over for “reckless driving” at around 8:30 p.m. local time.

“As officers approached the driver of the vehicle, a confrontation ensued and the suspect fled the scene on foot,” police said at the time. “Officers pursued the suspect and again attempted to take the suspect into custody. Another standoff ensued while attempting to take the suspect into custody. ; however, the suspect was eventually apprehended.”

Police leaders later retracted those claims.

“I’ll be honest with you about the stop itself. There were reports of people witnessing what was believed to be reckless driving,” Police Chief Cerelyn Davis told CNN on Friday. “We’ve seen the cameras. We’ve seen the body cameras. Even what happened before this stop, we can’t confirm.”

“We have conducted a fairly extensive investigation to determine what the probable cause was, but we have been unable to confirm this,” she added. “It doesn’t mean something didn’t happen, but there’s no evidence.”

The Nichols family is also skeptical of the police version of events.

“We don’t know anything other than what we saw in the video,” Ben Crump, an attorney for the Nichols family, said at a news conference Friday.

“They say he was driving recklessly. We have to see it. We certainly can’t take their word for it.”

A car with tinted windows circled the block several times before turning onto the sidewalk. “I think people really know that my brother doesn’t deserve this,” he added. “He’s not that kind of guy. Yeah, he’s just a nice guy on the board. … We want justice.”

Mr. Dupree, a California resident, added that he felt guilty for not protecting his younger siblings.

“I’m 99% sure my brother has never fought before. One time he got into an argument with other people and we weren’t there to protect him. My brother tried to work with them,” he said.
