A man was arrested Monday after allegedly shooting and killing two people in an unprovoked attack on an Arizona business before fleeing into the desert, officials said.

Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dennells said the suspect entered a business in Wheatstone, Arizona, twice Monday as a customer, then returned and opened fire with at least one rifle, noting that the man may have possessed more than one arms.

Dennis said there were weapons in the store and a shootout ensued.

The suspect fled, and the responding deputies chased him into the nearby desert but lost track, the sheriff said.

Whetstone is about 65 miles southeast of Tucson.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the search, which ordered residents within a four-mile radius to shelter in place and closed nearby roads, including part of Highway 90, during the search, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officials have not released the suspect’s name or details of how he was captured.

The suspect is a 37-year-old military veteran, according to Daniels.
