AUSTIN — TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston looms as the game-time decision No. 2. The 4th Horned Frog, Texas, on Saturday night the 18th, sources told ESPN.
Johnston injured his ankle during his first possession at Texas Tech last week. According to sources, his practice this week is limited because he will not participate in any practice at TCU until Thursday.
The expectation surrounding the program remains that Johnston will warm up and play, but his form appears to be based on how he felt Saturday night. TCU (9-0) trailed by seven against the Longhorns (6-3).
Johnston has become one of the most explosive and dynamic wide receivers in the country as he caught touchdown passes in four straight games before his early exit from Texas Tech. He has rushed to No. No. 20 on ESPN’s NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper’s Big Board, he could eventually move up because he’s Kiper’s No. 4 wide receiver.
Part of the reason Johnston has moved up the draft rankings is that he fits the archetype of a 6-foot-4, 215-pound NFL receiver and still has top speed at that size. On the season, Johnston has 42 catches for 650 yards.
Johnston had one of the most impressive back-to-back performances of the season in October when he threw for 206 yards on 14 receptions the following week against Oklahoma State. Kansas threw for 206 yards and grabbed eight from 180 yards.
He had 634 receiving yards as a sophomore and was named a top-12 first-team honoree in 2021. Johnston was a rhetorical promise at Texas, but he ended up being late to TCU in December 2019 after a series of changes to the Texas coaching staff.
